What are the different types of hair loss?

There are different types of hair loss, also known as alopecia:

  • Involutional alopecia: It is a natural condition in which the hair becomes thin with age. Most of the hair follicles go into the resting phase and the rest of the hairs become fewer in number.
  • Androgenic alopecia: It is a genetic condition. It can affect both men and women.

  • Scarring alopecia: It results to permanent loss of hair. Skin disorders and inflammatory skin conditions like acne, folliculitis and cellulitis often result in scars which destroy the regeneration ability of the hair.

What is the most common type of hair loss in men?

The most common type of hair loss in men is the androgenic alopecia and is also known as male pattern baldness. According to various surveys, more than 50% of men over the age of 50 are affected by male pattern baldness.

The prime cause for male pattern baldness is genetics. It has been found that male pattern baldness is associated with male sex hormones known as androgens.
